Through a Public Health Excellence Grant awarded by the State of Massachusetts, the group formed to enhance public health and safety in Merrimack Valley. By sharing resources, best practices, and expertise and hiring shared staff, the organization is working to improve local public health capacity in the region.
The team needed a name and logo design and branding that could quickly and clearly explain who they are, why they formed, and the services they offer to the Merrimack Valley public. They wanted the words public and health in their new name in addition to Merrimack Valley to anchor them to the region they are serving.
From a design perspective, they wanted a crisp and bright logo design and branding that incorporated the State public health emblem, but with a new twist on the design to differentiate themselves.
The team was presented with four names at their reveal meeting, and MV Public Health Alliance was the winner. The name incorporated all of the words that needed to be included. The MV for Merrimack Valley connected the public health organization to the region they serve and it also worked well visually during the design process. The group also knew they needed the words public and health in the name to clarify who they are and what they offer. The team decided that the descriptor word alliance favored other words like group or consortium.
MV Public Health Alliance also needed a tagline to help further explain their public health organization’s goals within the communities. Merrimack Valley communities, safer and stronger together, was the decided tagline.
During the project’s design phase, it was decided that MV and Public would be the visual focus. Blue, green, and purple were the favored color palettes as they are common in the public health space. Still, the organization could stand out and differentiate itself by using brighter hues. The state public health emblem was used as a visual icon next to the stacked words of the Health Alliance for a nice logo lockup and balance. Using the State’s recognized public health emblem with bright and crisp colors created a fresh take on the emblem to connect the new public health organization and differentiate it from other organizations.
In addition to their new name and logo design and branding, MV Public Health Alliance needed a poster they could introduce themselves to the public. This was the first piece of collateral created using their new logo design and branding. The goal was to explain who they are, how they formed, and the services they will offer to the public. The poster explained how the group was formed through a State grant and also described the services they can offer by working across towns to enhance public health and safety in the region.
